The horse was diagnosed by the veterinarian with a torn flexor tendon. He was unable to place weight on the affected leg.
Donnie created a patten shoe and placed it on the hoof. He made several phone calls to John Burt, BWFA Master Farrier, TESTER, Master Educator of Arkansas, in order to help determine the degree of angle that the shoe required.
Each month, the angle was lowered slightly. It began at a one inch rise on the patten shoe, the hoof was then at 52 degrees. Every thirty days for three months, the shoe was reset at the same angle. Approximately every thirty days following the first 90 days, the patten shoe was removed and a 3 degree wedge pad was placed on the hoof. Every thirty days following that, the pad was replaced with a slightly lower degree of wedge. The horse is now wearing a wide-web shoe for support, but is doing well. He is about 95% sound. Only one hoof with the flexor tendon issue was shod originally, now both hooves are shod. Donnie Arnold Brooksville, Florida Journeyman I 352-428-9607 |
